Boundary Training Required
for all CMA Clergy

CMA Council Meeting, February 19, 2007:

Juanita Bradley, representing CMA's Church and Ministry Committee, presented the Committee's recommendation for mandatory boundary training and moved its adoption by the Council. The recommendation provides as follows:

In order to maintain standing within the Chicago Metropolitan Association, all clergy must take the required Boundary Training course by December 21, 2012. All persons seeking transfer of standing, privilege of call, or dual standing must complete the boundary training required by the CMA within 1 year. All persons seeking ordination must complete the required boundary training before ordination. Totally inactive clergy may be exempt from boundary training. Retired clergy in any active role must receive the required boundary training.

The recommendation was approved by the CMA Council and the requirement for boundary training was forwarded to the CMA Annual Meeting on May 5, 2007 where it was also approved.

  • Motion approved at CMA Council Meeting on 2/19/07.
  • Approved by Chicago Metropolitan Association Annual Meeting on May 5, 2007.

    Boundary Training Required
for all those In Care with CMA

Effective September 1, 2005, you cannot be ordained in CMA without having taken a CMA sponsored or approved Boundaries Workshop.

The Chicago Metropolitan Association sponsors a number of two-day workshops to increase awareness about the boundaries that exist between us and those we serve.

Because of the seriousness of the issue, the Church and Ministry Committee and the Association Council voted to require that all students In Care of the Chicago Metropolitan Association complete Boundary Training before they can be approved for Ordination by the Church and Ministry, effective September 1, 2005.

  • The next CMA Boundary Training Workshops, which are now required of all clergy with standing in CMA and all those In Care with CMA, are scheduled on the following dates:

  • January 28-29, 2010:
This training is on a Thursday and Friday at First United Church of Oak Park. The program is open to clergy and those in care.

  • June 4-5, 2010 - tentative:
This training is tentatively set for a Friday and Saturday at a location to be determined and is open to clergy and those in care. The date may be moved to the following weekend depending on the date selected for the Illinois Conference Annual Meeting that month.

CMA boundary training uses the current Faith Trust Institute video-based curriculum plus a variety of supplemental materials. This current boundary training curriculum was first offered in January 2005. If you took CMA boundary training before 2005, you will have to take it again based on the new curriculum. This CMA training is accepted throughout the Illinois Conference. Other UCC conferences may or may not accept this training.

At this point, CMA boundary training need only be taken once, so if you have taken the training with CMA after 2004 and received a certificate, you do not need to sign up again. Refresher courses may be offered in the future.

Each program will begin promptly at 9:00 am sharp on both days. Please plan to arrive by 8:45 am. You must be on time. The program concludes at 5:00 pm on the first day and 4:00 pm on the second day.

YOU MUST ATTEND ALL DAY BOTH DAYS TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THESE TRAININGS.

The registration fee is $30 ($10 for those In Care with CMA). The fee includes all meals and materials both days.

Send your registration form and check (payable to CMA) to the CMA office. Attendance is limited to 16 participants.

We believe this training will greatly enhance your effectiveness in ministry and be a blessing to you and the people you serve. If you have any questions about the training, please contact the Association Minister at CMA at 312-939-5918.
