Friday, September 30, 7-10 pm: Celebrating the Artists Among Us
Come at 7pm for a gallery opening and reception featuring local artists who work
at the intersections of community, spirituality, and activism.
At 8pm we'll gather for open mic music, poetry, and performance. Reserve a seat
or a performance slot by registering online.
Saturday, October 1, 9am to 9pm: The Art of Community All Day Retreat
Registration Required
On this day of retreat and renewal we will build community through the arts and
create art in collaboration with one another. Facilitators Bliss Browne and Valerie
Tutson will guide us in story gathering and ritual, joined by visual and performing
artists committed to transforming community through vision, imagination and action.
Participants will work in large and small groups, exploring a wide range of artistic
and facilitative processes. The stories we bring will activate the vital links among
creativity, social action, and belonging. We will practice deeper forms of communication,
forge new connections, and find spiritual practices that sustain and challenge us.
Our meals will feature international cuisine prepared by communities connected to CTS
through our student body. We'll enjoy a lunchtime concert by renowned social justice
story telling musician Ken Medema. MDiv students Rachel Bahr Attanasie and Tiffany Trent
will help us rehearse our future with the revolutionary process of Forum Theater.
In the evening we'll offer up the labors of our day in vespers worship.
Sunday morning, we'll prayerfully name next steps. Our work will be our play.
The student and alum planning team offers this event as a faithful attempt to engage
the gifts and needs of our beloved communities. For this reason, we seek to strengthen
the community that gathers while exploring ways that the arts can help us confront and
undo racism, homophobia and related social injustices.
To help us with this charge, we invoke the question of Augusto Boal in his literacy
experiment with People's Theater of Peru, as described in Theatre of the Oppressed (1979):
Where do you live?
Boal's question calls forth images, memories, sounds, tastes and smells that are at
once intimate, communal, economic, racial, environmental, bodily, and deeply spiritual.
We will ask this question of one another and dare to hear, see, and touch the answers.
Sample activities:
The storytelling game
Rehearsing Against Racism
Psalm Writing
Painting meditation
Registrants are encouraged to submit any activities, skills, or interests you would
like to share in the space available on the online registration form.
Sunday, October 2, 9am to 12pm: Creating Our Future: What's Next?
This time is set aside for those who wish to continue the work of Saturday forward
to the next levels in the places where we live and work. We'll worship, envision,
and plan next steps. Specific attention will be given to the life of the CTS community,
and our hopes for the next 150 years.
ALL ARE WELCOME!

WHAT IS A SUPPORT TEAM?
A Support Team is a group of volunteers working together to provide
practical, emotional, and spiritual support to individuals and families with
health concerns or other special needs.
WHAT DOES A SUPPORT TEAM DO?
A team's activities may include transportation to the doctor or grocery
store, household or yard chores. Some people enjoy running errands,
preparing meals, or providing social outings. Others prefer to visit, make
phone calls, or provide a break for caregivers.
Team Members simply do what they enjoy doing for others, when they are able,
in an organized way, with a built-in support system.
WHY ARE SUPPORT TEAMS NEEDED?
People are more isolated these days. In general, people are living longer
with fewer resources. Improved medical treatments help people live longer
with certain illnesses, but not always with the quality of life desired.
Young families often need assistance with a crisis, such as a high-risk
pregnancy, or with a child with special needs. Families are also more
geographically dispersed and two-income families create new caregiving
challenges.
TRAINER
Carol Padgett, Ph.D. has been a National Trainer with The Support Team
Network for many years, bringing her expertise in Psychology and End-of-Life
Care to this training. She has served on and developed Teams for over a
decade for multiple needs in the church as well as in healthcare settings.
Her natural sense of humor and warm facilitation skills will enhance the
participant's experience in learning how to develop Support Teams for almost
any need.

UCC takes leadership role in Dear Sudan

UCC takes leadership role in Dear Sudan humanitarian campaign;
congregations urged to participate
Written by J. Bennett Guess
Tuesday, 26 July 2005
The UCC is offering its financial and technical support for Church World
Services' "Dear Sudan" campaign, a growing interfaith effort to increase
awareness of the inhumane conditions faced by Sudanese refugees and to raise
resources to support humanitarian relief.
The expanding movement - dubbed "Dear Sudan" by Church World Service - asks
each local community in the United States - through ecumenical, interfaith
cooperation - to sign a "Dear Sudan" letter that recognizes the suffering of
Sudanese refugees. In so doing, communities make a commitment to raise
enough money to feed for one day the number of refugees equivalent
to that community's population.
A gift of 16 cents will provide one day of nutritional support for a single
refugee, CWS says. Ideally, communities will multiply the 16-cent figure by
their town's population and then commit to raising that dollar amount in
support of humanitarian relief, explains Susan M. Sanders, the UCC 's
minister for the global sharing of resources.
The concept began with Tim Nonn, a UCC member in Petaluma, Calif.
(population 55,000), where Nonn organized his local church -- in partnership
with ecumenical and interfaith partners -- to raise enough money to feed
55,000 Sudanese refugees for one day.
Starting with a fundraising goal of $8,800, the Petaluma effort eventually
netted more than $10,000 in 2004, enabling the community to support 65,000
displaced refugees for one more day.
The UCC's General Synod, which met July 1-5 in Atlanta, passed a resolution
on peace in Sudan that included support for the "Dear Sudan" movement. "UCC
congregations and members have been encouraged by General Synod to support
this campaign," Sanders says.
An advance gift of $5,000 from the UCC's One Great Hour of Sharing special
mission offering has been contributed. Church leaders also are asking local
congregations to take a leadership role in promoting the "Dear Sudan"
concept in their respective communities.
Church World Service has long been active in calling for the international
community to act to stop Sudan's ongoing violence. A January 2005 peace
agreement ended the 21-year north-south war that killed at least two million
people. However, more than 4 million displaced people are now traveling from
encampments in the north back to the south at a rate of about 1,500 a day,
most without any means of assistance or support. Food supplies are
inadequate, and the infrastructure was decimated.

was launched on July 19.
