What is the Souper Bowl of Caring?
More than 140 million Americans watch the NFL Super Bowl each year.

JUST ONE DOLLAR to help those in need. On or near FEBRUARY 5, 2006,
you have the chance to join youth and adults around the world to help
put an end to hunger and poverty. The Souper Bowl of Caring is an
effort to touch lives and teach youth and adults to fight hunger and
poverty in their local communities and overseas. The 2005 effort was
led by over 11,000 organizations and generated $4 million for charities
across the country and world.
How?
1. REGISTER at www.souperbowl.org
or call 1-800-358-SOUP and get a FREE RESOURCE KIT to personalize your
Souper Bowl of Caring event. The kit includes posters, information
on the Service Blitz, Bible studies, hunger studies, and interactive
teaching materials.
2. Gather the Youth and your friends to organize an activity you can
do in your community or congregation (see below for sample ideas).
3. COLLECT dollar donations.
4. REPORT your collections online at
www.souperbowl.org
or call 1-800-358-SOUP

Vital Action Needed on 2006 Federal Budget
Urgent Message From
Richard N. Peterson
Illinois Conference Representative to
UCC Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM)
Final Vote set for Wednesday, Feb 1st
I am writing about the federal budget that the US Congress is considering
and the devastating impact its cuts could have on the most vulnerable
in our society.
When Congress adjourned in December, most of us thought the battle was over
and that we had lost that battle. For three months, the leadership in the
Congress had to keep delaying roll calls on the measure because they didn’t
have enough votes - and they didn’t have enough votes because concerned
citizens across the country called their Senators and Representatives to
raise objections.
Just a few days before Christmas, however, in the wee hours of the morning,
Vice President Cheney was flown in from the Middle East, to cast the deciding
vote on the legislation in the Senate. Yes, the vote was 51-50 to enact the
budget cuts. That close!
But it turns out that the Senate added a provision that wasn’t in the House
bill. So the legislation has to go back to the House of Representatives again.
That is expected to happen in the last days of January or the first days of
February 2006.
In July 2005, General Synod XXV of the United Church of Christ adopted a
strong resolution to advance the cause of the most disadvantaged in the
budgetary and appropriations process. This resolution underscores
Christ’s call to serve the poor by calling attention to the 2006 US federal
budget which significantly increases the burdens placed upon the poor and
calls on the UCC and the churches to speak about this issue in the public
arena. This position has been forcefully communicated by JWM staff in the
UCC’s Washington DC office. In addition, JWM has prepared Winners
and Losers: Faith Reflections on the President’s Proposed Federal Budget
2006, a thoughtful, comprehensive study guide for individuals
and churches which may be
DOWNLOADED HERE.
As your JWM representative and as Chair of the CMA’s Church in Society
Committee, I now ask you to do two things.
I urge you to contact your Representative to share your thoughts on the
forthcoming vote.
In keeping with the resolution adopted by the UCC General Synod, I ask
that you share information about this important vote with members of your
congregation, and encourage them to take whatever actions they deem appropriate.
Thanks for your faithful consideration of this important issue.

Final Giving for 2005 OCWM Needed
Giving to UCC down 20% in Illinois Conference this year!
An Urgent Request From Rev Jorge Morales Associate Conference Minister
Dear Pastor and Church Leader,
A warm New Year's greeting to you and your congregation.
If your church has already sent in its total final contributions for 2005 for
Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM), I want to thank you and the
congregation for having done so.
If your congregation's total contributions to OCWM have not yet been sent
and you want them counted as 2005 gifts, please ask the appropriate church
officer to mail them this week!
EXPLANATORY NOTE from CMA: As you know gifts to Our Church's
Wider Mission are your church's basic support for the national UCC
denomination, the Illinois Conference and the Chicago Metropolitan Association.
They are your basic membership dues, and are separate from any mission giving
such as One Great Hour of Sharing, Neighbors in Need, Disaster relief or
support for the Still Speaking Campaign. OCWM funds are sent by local UCC
member churches to their local conference (the Illinois Conference for us)
which in turn forwards what it feels is appropriate to the national denomination
office and to each local association (CMA).
Our latest figures for OCWM giving in 2005 show that more congregations are
further behind in their giving than at any time in the past five years.
OCWM income figures just prior to the Christmas holiday showed that we
were approximately $400,000 short of reaching our goal of $2,027,231 (about
20% short). This 2005 OCWM Goal is the same amount we actually collected
last year in 2004, so we are 20% behind last year.
The week prior to Christmas an updated giving report was mailed to your
church showing where the congregation is in its giving compared to its
Accepted Goal or the Covenanted Fair Share figure that was
tabulated if no goal was accepted.
All OCWM 2005 contributions received (in the lock-box or Conference office)
by Tuesday, January 17 will be counted for 2005. Please note that Monday,
January 16 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and a holiday, which makes it
necessary for mail to be sent the Friday or Saturday prior in order for it
to arrive in time to be counted for 2005.
If your congregation has met its 2005 goal and is able to make an additional
contribution - going the "Extra Mile" for 2005 OCWM giving - we invite you
to do so.
May the blessing of the Epiphany come upon us all and enhance our ministry
and mission as a united family faith.
In Christ,
Jorge
Illconfjorge@aol.com
CMA NOTE: The continuing shortfall in OCWM support for the
Illinois Conference (and therefore for the UCC and CMA), make the special
conference meeting called for February 11, 2006 all the more critical.
That meeting is called to discuss Open Space Technology as a method for
managing Conference and Association business. Read more about the meeting
further down this column.
