WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19: ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE
The Conscientious Projector Presents the film Orwell Rolls In His Grave on Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at 7 pm at Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ, 615 West Wellington Avenue, Chicago.
This film is a powerful examination of modern media and its impact on our political culture. Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth, Director Robert Kane Pappas explores what the media doesnŐt like to talk about - Itself. Meticulously tracing the process by which media has distorted and often dismissed actual news events, Pappas presents a riveting and eloquent mix of media professionals and leading intellectual voices on the media. Orwell Rolls In His Grave reminds us 1984 is no longer a date in the future! Sag Harbor-Basement Pictures, 103 minutes.
Admission is Free (donations accepted).

SATURDAY, APRIL 1: FARMWORKERS MARCH ON MCDONALD'S
Join the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and allies in a March and
Rally to call on McDonald's to ensure real rights for farmworkers on
Saturday, April 1 in Chicago.
The day begins with a 5-mile march to the Rock-n-Roll McDonald's in
Chicago. Gather at 9:30 am at W 18th / Blue Island / Loomis in Chicago.
The march will kick off at 10:00 am.
After the March, stay for the 1:00 pm Rally at the Rock-n-Roll McDonald's,
600 N. Clark St at Ohio on Chicago's near north side;
join us for lunch, music, and speakers after the rally.
Contact brigitte@interfaithact.org
to invite the farmworkers to speak at your church or host them for a meal
during their McDonald's Truth Tour.
For almost a year, the farmworkers of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW)
and allies in the faith, student and human rights communities have called
upon McDonald's to follow Taco Bell's lead and work with the CIW to address
sub-poverty wages and exploitative working conditions in McDonald's tomato
supply chain. Tomato pickers toil long days for 45 cents per 32-lb bucket of
tomatoes, with no right to overtime pay, no health insurance, no sick leave,
no paid vacation, and no right to organize to improve these conditions. In
the most extreme cases, workers are held against their will and forced to work
in modern-day slavery rings.
In March of 2005, the CIW and Yum Brands, Taco Bell's parent company, achieved
a precedent-setting agreement after a 4-year boycott supported by many national
religious bodies, including the United Church of Christ. This agreement
directly improved workers' wages in Taco Bell's supply chain and established
a rigorous code of conduct with CIW as a monitoring body. Many people of
faith and religious leaders, including Rev. Linda Jaramillo, Executive Minister
of the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries, have written McDonald's and called
upon them to work together with the CIW farmworkers to ensure similar justice
in their tomato supply chain.
Yet, McDonald's has refused to work with the CIW to develop an enforceable
code of conduct and take responsibility for the downward pressure their
high-volume, low-cost purchasing places on farmworker wages. In fact,
McDonald's is promoting a plan that threatens to undercut the gains achieved
in the CIW-Yum agreement. Farmworkers need you to join them on April 1st to
call on McDonald's to ensure real rights in their tomato supply chain, including:
1. The right to a fair wage, after more than 25 years of sub-poverty wages;
2. The right for farmworkers to participate in the decisions that affect their lives;
3. The right to a real, enforceable, code of conduct based on modern labor standards.
What you can do!
* Join us and invite others to join us on April 1st
* Invite a farmworker to speak to your faith community or group.
