THURSDAY, MAY 4: CTS 2006 CASTANEDA LECTURE
Chicago Theological Seminary will present the 2006 Gilberto Castañeda Lecture
entitled: A queer fidelity: reinventing Christian marriage
given by Scott Haldeman, Assistant Professor of Worship at CTS and
Spring 2006 Faculty Research Fellow of the Lesbian and Gay Religious Studies
Center at CTS.
Thursday, May 4, 2006
Reception, 5:00 p.m., First Floor Cloisters
Lecture, 6:00 p.m., Graham Taylor Hall
Chicago Theological Seminary, 5757 South University Avenue, Chicago, Illinois
The 2006 Gilberto Castañeda Lecture A queer fidelity: reinventing Christian marriage
will consist in reflections by Dr. Scott Haldeman on Christian marriage in relation to
one gay man’s life and loves. His research in the history, theology and rites of Christian
marriage and the contemporary same-sex union debates serves as the foundation of this work.
Speaking as the first Faculty Research Fellow of the Lesbian and Gay Religious Studies
Center at the Chicago Theological Seminary, Dr. Haldeman is grateful for the rich
conversations with Spring 2006 Center research assistants-Kunitoshi Sakai, Josh Steward
and Anthony Hollins; and participants in the seminar Gay Marriage, Christian Marriage
that have enriched his thought; and to The Gill Foundation, which awarded CTS the grant
that made the founding of the Center possible.
To all those who yearn for a church, much less a world, where all love is honored and
truth can be told, Dr. Haldeman dedicates this evening.
The 2006 Gilberto Castañeda Lecture is sponsored by the Lesbian and Gay Religious
Studies Center at the Chicago Theological Center. The recently established Center
is to be a premier think-tank and activist resource center. Its mission is to empower
people of faith to take back religion that has been hijacked to justify homophobia,
fear, and hatred.
Admission to the reception and lecture is free and open to the public. For more
information, please contact Mike Underhill, Director, Lesbian and Gay Religious
Studies Center at the Chicago Theological Seminary, 773-322-0236.
