NOVEMBER 2, 2006: CRLN ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP LUNCHEON
CRLN Annual Membership Luncheon will be held November 2, 2006 with Bishop
Alvaro Ramazzini of Guatemala, one of Latin America’s most important human
rights leaders, and president of Guatemala’s Catholic Bishops Conference.
Deceptive Development: The looting of the precious metals in the Americas was an obsession of the Spanish conquistadors, beginning with Christopher Columbus. Millions of indigenous died in servitude working the mines, an inhuman reality chronicled in “Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent” by Uruguayan Eduardo Galeano. Today, the plunder continues under the guise of “development”. In the 1990’s, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund obligated developing countries to loosen their mining codes as a condition for receiving loans, giving new advantages to multinational corporations. As a result, mining companies have flocked to Latin America, lured by lax environmental and labor codes, low costs and high profit margins. The Marlingold mine, operated by a subsidiary of U.S.-Canadian corporation, Glamis Gold in San Marcos, Guatemala, and the Cerrejon coal mine in La Guajira, Colombia, currently owned jointly by Anglo American, BHP Billiton, and Glencore, have opened on lands in indigenous areas without engaging in the consultation process mandated by international treaties. Only a tiny percentage of the profits are returned to these national governments- and none to the local communities in which the mines are located. Local people have to live with the environmental damage and health risks that accompany mining operations and destroy the quality of their lives, yet these mines are invariably described as development” projects. What kind of development, and for whom?
Bishop ÁlvaroLeonel Ramazzini, the bishop of the Diocese of San Marcos, Guatemala, and president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Guatemala, is an internationally acclaimed defender of humanrights. As a religious leader, he has publicly denounced unjust natural resource extraction by foreign corporations which destroy indigenous lands in Guatemala. Along with other bishops,Bishop Ramazzini played a pivotal role in the 1996 Peace Accords. He is activein the promotion of the Recovery of Historical Memory Project (REMHI), which found state agents responsible for over 90% of human rights abuses during Guatemala’s 36 year armed conflict. As director of the Catholic Church's Land Pastoral, he has advocated for campesinos, immigrants and the landless by promoting a rural development strategy which would address the problem of poverty and land rights in Guatemala. He has been a vocal opponent of the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which will further dispossess the poor.
Responding to the call of Latin America’s poor majorities, Chicago Religious
Leadership Network on Latin America is an interfaith information and action network
that mobilizes religious leaders and congregations in Illinois to advance peace,
justice and human rights in our hemisphere. Through speakers, workshops, monthly
membership updates, advocacy action initiatives, visits to Latin America, and
meetings with U.S. policy-makers, CRLN engages religious leaders to speak out
for more just U.S. policies in our hemisphere.
