    Uhlich Children’s Christmas Gift Drive

Uhlich Children’s Advantage Network in Chicago, founded as a home for children made orphan by the Civil War, has been a place of refuge and shelter for over 136 years.

As a United Church of Christ partner in ministry, we now serve over 10,477 children and their families in a wide variety of life-changing programs throughout the Chicagoland area.

As you can imagine, providing a Christmas gift for the many children and families we serve can be a daunting challenge. That is where members of your congregation can partner with us in a vital and concrete way - by providing a Christmas gift to a child who otherwise might not receive one.

UCC Church members can help us give a Christmas gift in one of three ways:

First, our children, infant through 14 years old, have all created a wish list which names specific toys. A parishioner can chose to pick an item from that wish list and purchase that gift for a child. In this case, many Churches set up an Angel Tree during Advent where parishioners can claim and purchase, on their own, a particular item from a child’s list.

Second, because our older teens’ wish lists are very specific, parishioners can also commit to buying a $50 gift card from popular stores such as Best Buy, Target, or Borders.

Or third, your entire congregation can choose to take up a special collection or offering which will enable us to purchase gift cards or complete our children’s wish lists.

If your congregation is interested in being a Christmas partner with us, or if you have any questions, please contact Rev. Steven Reid at 773-588-0180 ext. 1486, by November 10, 2006. Calling by then will give us enough time to send you the information and materials you will need to get started.

We are hoping to receive all gift donations by December 11th so that we can distribute them at the various Christmas parties which we will be hosting across our agency.

Many UCC Church members have been long-time, loyal supporters. We hope you will take the opportunity again this year to share God’s Christmas Gift in a real and tangible way.

    Yours in Christ,

    Rev. Steven Reid
    Chaplain/Church Relations Officer

Next Program: Teen and Young Adult Dating Violence

    Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Dating violence is a serious and sometimes deadly issue for teens and young adults. This workshop will help participants to understand the dynamics of teen and young adult dating violence; the effects on victims; legal issues when working with clients; safety planning; and possible interventions and resources in response to dating violence. Participants will learn that while teen dating violence shares many similarities to adult domestic violence there are also several important issues that are uniquely characteristic of teen dating violence.

Presenters: This workshop is being presented by the Children and Teen Issues Committee of the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network, a coalition of over 100 domestic violence service providers in the Chicago metropolitan area. The committee is dedicated to ending and preventing domestic and dating violence through the use of public awareness, advocacy, professional training, and support for service providers. Most recently the committee has published a book of stories, poems, and art created by youth affected by the violence in their lives. The book will be available for workshop participants at no cost.

  • Training Location: The Night Ministry, 4711 N. Ravenswood Ave, Chicago.
  • Time: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
  • Cost: Free

This year's campaign focuses on generating greater public awareness of AIDS and the prevention of the spread of the HIV virus.
