(Posted 11/09/07) LEAD PASTOR, FIRST UNITED CHURCH OF OAK PARK www.firstunitedoakpark.com First United deeply values inclusiveness, mission, family, diversity, education, justice for all God's people and caring for our Biblical roots. Our congregation is wonderfully diverse in theological viewpoint, age, sexual orientation and faith traditions. We are a union church of the First Presbyterian Church and First United Church of Christ of Oak Park, and more than half our 766 members come from other or no faith backgrounds. In 1994, we became an Open and Affirming/More Light congregation. We embrace our GLBT brothers and sisters and celebrate their active involvement in our ministry and church community. Sunday mornings bustle with music class for toddlers, Sunday school for pre-K through junior high, 2 - 3 concurrent Adult Education options, and choir rehearsal. Our worship service is alive with thought-provoking sermons, and the beauty of instrumental and choral music. Adults and youth participate in all aspects of the service. Our junior and senior high students have booming youth groups that attract youth even from outside the congregation. The attendance on any given Sunday night is upwards of 40 for the junior highs and 60 for the senior highs. We champion social justice in worship and in active mission. Mission here is not just about funding and charity, but also about involvement and transformation. We house the local food pantry and Walk-In Ministry for people who need life assistance. We host the homeless two nights a week in our fellowship hall. We partner with a Presbyterian church in Chicago to tutor children. We hold weekly Peace Vigils and support Arab/Muslim/Christian dialogue in the Middle East. We provide meeting space for groups including Boy Scouts, Families Anonymous, and AA. We celebrate birthdays with Interfaith House, host monthly PFLAG meetings, and support local social service agencies such as Sister House, Erie House and Casa Central. When we sold one of our two church buildings we endowed a special mission fund to support our convictions about theology in action. We are blessed with an active and engaged membership that brings a wide diversity of skills, interests and life experiences to shape our focus and mission. We seek a long-term relationship with a lead pastor who will create and maintain a worship framework that inspires, informs, and nourishes the spiritual welfare of our congregation. We are looking for a person who is able to harness the power of language to invigorate us to think creatively about the Bible and embrace the mysterious nature of God. We seek a person of lived faith, with compassion, a sense of humor, and a willingness to be invested in the life of the congregation and its members. We look for someone who leads with a collegial, collaborative approach both with the lay leadership and staff. If you would like your profile forwarded to First United Church, please contact the CMA office at (312) 939-5918, or fax (312) 393-1116. (Posted 10/05/07) PART-TIME MINISTER FOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION, FIRST CHURCH OF LOMBARD UCC The community of Christians at The First Church of Lombard are seeking an energetic, caring, organized and faithful individual who would like to educate and inspire our congregation. This is a part-time position working as our church's Minister for Christian Education for pre-school aged children through adults. Not only will you be able to help further us on our individual journeys, but you will also, as our new Minister for Christian Education, be able to share your thoughts and stories through regular preaching and worship leadership opportunities. We are located in Lombard, or the Lilac Village, in the western suburbs, a comfortable distance from Chicago, with excellent schools, and close to the train and major roadways. As our name suggests, we are one of the first churches in Lombard, with the Maple Street Chapel being dedicated in 1870. Our Maple Street Chapel is one of the historic buildings in town with a very active Chapel Society. Recently, our church added on to our 1957 building with a multi-purpose, gymnasium-type room, and additional classroom and meeting spaces. We took on the challenge of this addition knowing we would be able to better serve the community through our many missions. Along with lay leaders, your mission as our Minister for Christian Education would be to first build a sense of fellowship among the congregation and yourself. Relationships are an important part of our church life. Also just as important are being an effective teacher, having an affinity for working with children, being a visionary and collaborative. Through this new found excitement you will find at our church, we would also hope for our new minister to share this excitement with others in the community. Even though we have been a long standing congregation in Lombard and truly value our long time members of the congregation, we also have a theologically diverse group of newer members. One of the challenges of your mission with us is to be able to relate to both groups, through educational opportunities. We are a group of individuals who love to learn new things, but are also somewhat reluctant to change. However our mission to serve others is always of utmost importance to us, regardless of where we are individually on our faith journeys. If your search in finding a position to inspire and serve has led you to this entry, we ask that you prayerfully consider our very active and friendly church. We would be delighted to hear from you!
