  • You are invited to a gathering to consider:

    What can we do together for health care justice?

    There are many of us in United Church of Christ churches in the Chicago area who have expertise around health and health care. We are physicians, patients, families of patients, leaders in public health, nurses, social activists, dieticians, physical therapists, health care administrators, professors of health, health policy advocates, chaplains, and so much more.

    When it comes to actually having an impact on the full spectrum of issues in health care justice, we have incredible resources among us!

    Recognizing the power of this amazing gift of resources, the Church in Society Committee of the Chicago Metropolitan Association is hosting an opportunity for faith-full dialogue, relationship building, and planning for action

    Together we will reflect on questions such as:

  • What could happen if we gathered as people of faith to get to know each other and share from our faith, experience and knowledge?
  • What do we, as UCC people, bring to these issues that is unique and that adds something critical to the movement?
  • What role we can play together in impacting health and health care in our communities and nation?

    All of CMA is invited to join us:

    CMA boundary training uses the current Faith Trust Institute video-based curriculum plus a variety of supplemental materials. This current boundary training curriculum was first offered in January 2005. If you took CMA boundary training before 2005, you will have to take it again based on the new curriculum. This CMA training is accepted throughout the Illinois Conference. Other UCC conferences may or may not accept this training.

    At this point, CMA boundary training need only be taken once, so if you have taken the training with CMA after 2004 and received a certificate, you do not need to sign up again. Refresher courses may be offered in the future.

    Each program will begin promptly at 9:00 am sharp on both days. Please plan to arrive by 8:45 am. You must be on time. The program concludes at 5:00 pm on the first day and 4:00 pm on the second day.

    The CMA office is located at 332 S. Michigan Ave, Suite 510, Chicago, IL, which is convenient for all public transportation. There is ample lower cost parking in the Grant Park South Garage, the south end of which is located right in front of our building. You enter the garage from an entrance lane on the left side of northbound Michigan Avenue immediately north of Van Buren Street.

    YOU MUST ATTEND ALL DAY BOTH DAYS TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THESE TRAININGS.

    The registration fee is $30 for clergy and $10 for In Care. The fee includes all meals and materials both days.

    Send your registration form and check (payable to CMA) to the CMA office. Attendance is limited to 16 participants. A Registration Form can be DOWNLOADED HERE.

    We believe this training will greatly enhance your effectiveness in ministry and be a blessing to you and the people you serve. If you have any questions about the training, please contact Rev. Edward Goode or Rev. Michael Denton at CMA at 312-939-5918.

    Future Boundary Training dates will be announced.

    THURSDAY, JULY 17 - SATURDAY, JULY 19: CENTER FOR PARISH DEVELOPMENT MISSIONAL CHURCH CONVOCATION 2008

    The Center for Parish Development's annual convocation will be held at the Cenacle Retreat in Chicago July 17-19, 2008.

    This years theme is: COMMUNITIES OF RECONCILIATION IN A CULTURE OF FEAR AND REVENGE

    So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation: that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. -2 Corinthians 5:17-19:

    CONVOCATION 2008 FEATURED SPEAKER, DR. LOIS Y. BARRETT, states:

    Serving the church involves understanding the nature of the church and the mission in which God sends the church. The church is the people of God, an alternative community with another set of allegiances and another set of practices from the dominant culture. As such, the church is to be light to the world, a city on a hill, a sign of the future God intends for the whole world.

    Dr Barrett's books include:
  • Treasure in Clay Jars: Patterns in Missional Faithfulness (Eerdmans, 2004), co-author;
  • Mission-Centered Congregations (Herald, 2002), editor;
  • "Marks of the Faithful Church-Marks of the Successful Church: A Response to Natural Church Development from a Missiological and Ecclesiological Perspective," Anabaptist Evangelism Council (February 1999);
  • Missional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North America (Eerdmans, 1998), co-author.

    As a result of your participation in this convocation you can expect to be able to-

  • Explore the principalities and powers that shape today's culture of fear and revenge.
  • Become more fluent in the biblical language and images of reconciliation.
  • Discover how the church as a community of reconciliation is a sign and foretaste of God's intent for the world.
  • Explore practices that shape communities of reconciliation for their witness before a watching world

    The missional church convocation is a learning experience, but it is much more: it is a time of rich and renewing worship, stimulating interaction with diverse participants, insightful Bible study, and fruitful networking - all for supporting your missional journey as a church leader.

    Convocation 2008 - Celebrating the Center's 40th year in partnership with the church.

    MONDAY, JULY 21 - FRIDAY, JULY 25: TRANSFORMING CHURCHES TOWARD A MISSIONAL POSTURE

    The Center for Parish Development will offer its Annual Training Seminar: Transforming Churches Toward a Missional Posture, July 21-25, 2008 in Chicago.

    The program is for church leaders and those who serve in a consultative role with congregations. This seminar offers critical foundations for guiding the missional transformation journey.

    Be introduced to a coherent and flexible process for major change toward a missional posture. "Missional" transformation is a learning journey of spiritual depth for congregation and leaders alike.

    This seminar will explore both conceptual foundations and practical strategies to -

  • help a congregation get ready for a transformation journey.
  • develop a common mind about current realities, developing motivation for change
  • cultivate new practices of mutuality, key for discerning faithful and creative vision
  • create and implement ministry designs that enable fruitful Christian life and witness

    Of special focus will be to explore strategies for judicatories who seek to support congregational transformation toward a missional posture.

    All programs, meals and lodging are included in the Seminar that will take place at the Cenacle Retreat in Chicago. Register by April 30 to save 10%

    For more information and to register, visit the Center's website HERE.
